The Chakalaka Chicken and Vegetable Sheet Pan Starter is crafted to help you make an unforgettably delicious sheet pan meal that the whole family will love, without all the extra dishes and hours of prep! Warm spices and tangy vinegar season the chicken and vegetables recreating the chakalaka flavor that’s popular throughout southern Africa.

Chakalaka is a versatile South African condiment served with grains, crusty bread, stews, and “braaied,” or “barbecued,” meats. The seasoning is typically added to salads or relishes containing beans, tomatoes, and onions, and sometimes bell peppers and other vegetables as well. Chakalaka originated in Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa, however, its flavors and ingredients share a deep historical story of Portuguese colonial rule. After the Portuguese brought back chiles across the Atlantic from the Americas, they slowly made their way into Portuguese’s own cuisine. As a result, each local that landed throughout Africa also began to incorporate Portuguese culinary traditions into their own. Chakalaka is a prominent example of the result of this colonial culinary history.
