Piri Piri Seasoning recreates the fiery and vibrant flavors of the traditional popular sauce in both Portuguese and Southern African cuisines into a delicious dry form. Its spicy, zesty, and bright flavors are crafted through the versatile combination of hot chiles, bell pepper, tomato, aromatics, and lemon peel.
Also known as peri-peri or pili-pili, piri piri is both a chile pepper and a flavor profile brought to Southern Africa by the colonial Portuguese. The piri piri sauce evolved into an enormously popular condiment wherever it traveled with Portuguese colonial settlers and indigenous peoples including in Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, and beyond. One of the most common chile peppers that make up the base for this sauce is the Bird’s Eye chile, a native chile of the Americas which Portuguese explorers brought back to Europe in the 16th century. The chile slowly journeyed its way around the world alongside the Portuguese armada and eventually into the Piri Piri sauce well-known today. Though each region has its own version of the Piri Piri flavor profile, the most common ingredients include chile peppers, citrus peel, red bell pepper, and onion.
This versatile seasoning is ready to use as-is for a delicious dry rub on seafood, poultry, or meat, or for an extra boost of flavor over roasted vegetables. The Piri Piri Seasoning can also be stirred together with olive oil and/or lemon juice to craft a thin paste that can be used as a marinade or basting sauce.
