Shawarma Seasoning celebrates the traditional flavors of Middle Eastern cuisine. Warm spices combine with a bit of heat and citrus for a savory, unforgettable flavor that’ll have you thinking that you should whip this up every week.

Shawarma is Middle Eastern street food with thin slabs of seasoned meat (typically, chicken or lamb) layered onto a vertical spit. The spit continually rotates throughout the day, and the mouthwatering meat is shaved off in thin strips to order. The strips are usually wrapped into pita bread with tahini sauce, pickles, vegetables, and even French fries. Shawarma is a dish that anyone can get behind. However, it’s thought to have originated in the 19th century in Turkey during the reign of the Ottoman Empire. It’s become a globally celebrated dish. Wherever immigrants from the Middle East have landed, you’ll find some form of shawarma. Famously, 20th-century Lebanese immigrants to Mexico brought their shawarma recipe with them, and it’s thought to have influenced the development of Mexico’s ‘tacos al pastor’ recipe.

Though it’s not likely that you have a spit or enough appetite at your home on which to make traditional shawarma, you can use the Shawarma Seasoning to recreate the flavors in your own kitchen. Look for chicken thighs or lamb in the grocery store, and then rub this seasoning onto the meat before cooking in a pan. Pair with pita and tahini for a traditional sandwich preparation or serve with rice and fresh salad.
